Animal Acquisition Statement

Over its 33-year history of growth and development, Ocean Park has earned its well deserved reputation as a leading zoological park that connects people with nature by offering its guests consistently educational and entertaining experiences. It provides a place for people to enjoy quality time with their family and learn about animals and information on how they can help conserve wildlife and the natural environment.

With over 38,000 Hong Kong students joining educational programs offered by Ocean Park last year alone and over 500,000 that have participated in these educational programs over the last 18 years, it is important that the Park puts the highest priority on safeguarding the welfare of all the animals in its care while advocating to students and the visitors conservation principles for the protection of wildlife and the environment.

As outlined in Ocean Park's animal acquisition policy, the Park is committed to first seek to acquire animals from other animal facilities through rescue, breeding loans, animal exchanges or purchases.

Acquisition of animals from the wild is always a last alternative and pursued only if there is independently verifiable scientific evidence that the wild population is sustainable and that the removal of a limited number of animals is non-detrimental to the population's survival. Any such acquisition must also comply with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) guidelines and the bylaws of the zoological associations to which the Park belongs. All international treaties, conventions, as well as relevant local and foreign laws and regulations will be adhered to when handling issues relating to animals.
