"Every Bottle Counts" Plastic Beverage Bottle Recycling Program

Introduction of the First Reverse Vending Machine Equipped with Octopus Contact-less Card Technology

To better achieve waste reduction and to encourage the recycling of useful plastic materials, while promoting the environmental protection awareness in Hong Kong, Ocean Park has launched environmentally friendly "reverse" vending machines (RVM) project in February 2007, namely "Every Bottle Counts" plastic beverage bottle recycling program, which was jointly developed by Swire Coca-Cola HK (SCCHK) and Octopus Card Limited, and supported by Ocean Park, Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) and Environmental Protection Department, Hong Kong.

In this pilot program, three RVMs are placed at Lowland, Headland and Tai Shue Wan in Ocean Park, as well as at a number of shopping malls under HKHS management. Blending with the idea of wise use of valuable resources, these machines are retrofitted from old model computer and vending machine, and the first one ever in the world to have incorporated the contact-less Octopus card technology.

With the Octopus card pre-registered with Octopus Rewards, consumers can either choose to earn 0.1 Octopus reward point, upon returning each empty plastic beverage bottle (of SCCHK), to spend at designated shops or donate the rewards to Ocean Park Conservation Fund Hong Kong (OPCFHK), whose mission is to advocate, facilitate and participate in the conservation of wildlife and habitats in Asia, through research and education. The RVMs also accept non-SCCHK plastic bottles, only for recycling purposes, with no reward points to be awarded.
