Ocean Park Hong Kong Environmental-Friendly Vehicles Including Hong Kong's First Hybrid Vehicle Now in Operation
Ocean Park Hong Kong is committed to be the world's best marine-based theme park, connecting people with nature. We focused on providing entertainment, education and conservation without forgetting our role as a socially responsible organization. Five years ago, Ocean Park proposed to replace a number of aged vehicles with environmental-friendly vehicles and implement a "Clean Air Outreach Program" to educate our next generation on the importance of a clean-air environment.
In November 2005, Ocean Park unveiled 22 environmental-friendly vehicles including the Hong Kong's first 45-seater hybrid vehicle as part of the "Cleaner Air by Ocean Park" project. The environmental-friendly fleet is now operating within and outside the Park and it is expected that 222 kg of pollutants can be reduced per year in Hong Kong as a result. Exhaust emission from this hybrid coach is 100 times less than that of normal coach.
Nominated by the HKSAR government in 2000, Ocean Park received funding of HK$10 million by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to replace 22 aged diesel vehicles and gasoline carts with environmental-friendly vehicles, to promote clean-air environment and support global conservation.
Tie in with this 'Clean Air Project', Ocean Park also established an educational "Clean Air Outreach Program" in 2004 to promote the importance of a clean-air environment for people, animals and nature, using an environmental van to visit schools. The program has successfully reached 18,000 students of 34 schools in Hong Kong during last year.
"We are thankful to the government and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, for their support in creating a cleaner air environment. Ocean Park has been committed to conservation and education and connecting people with nature for many years. In line with the Hong Kong Government, we hope to build a better society with cleaner air, and these environmental-friendly vehicles are a step in the right direction. In addition, we will continue to educate our next generation through the Clean Air Outreach Program, to increase awareness of the importance of environmental protection in Hong Kong," said Allan Zeman, Chairman of Ocean Park.
The “Cleaner Air By Ocean Park” Environmental Vehicles Handover Ceremony was held in 25 November 2005. Officiating guests included Dr. the Hon. Sarah Liao, JP, Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works, Mr. William Y Yiu, Executive Director, Charities, The Hong Kong Jockey Club as well as Mr. Allan Zeman, Chairman of Ocean Park and Mr. Tom Mehrmann, Chief Executive of Ocean Park.
"The Hong Kong Government is committed to promoting a clean-air environment and we are pleased to see that corporations like Ocean Park also share the same vision. We encourage more corporate and citizens to join hands in protecting our environment," said Dr. Sarah Liao, Secretary for the Environment in the handover ceremony.
