Fun Facts
The males defend their territory and intimidate enemies by puffing their jaws that are covered with spiked scales. The jaws can also turn black, resembling a human beard, which is how they got their name.
These lizards can also change their body colour to match the surrounding soil, helping them forage and avoid predators. When their body temperature is lower than the surroundings, they may darken their bodies, allowing them to absorb heat quicker under the sun and warm up more quickly.
