Ocean Park welcomes Year of the Monkey with “Golden Monkey Celebration” Float and “Lunar Lucky Fiesta” energises New Year with lively performances

2016-01-26

Ocean Park will feature Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkeys, our precious animal ambassadors, together with our uniquely-designed float, and promote conservation, on the first day of the Year of the Monkey at the Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Night Parade in Tsim Sha Tsui, hosted by the Hong Kong Tourism Board. The energetic float will carry our best wishes to Hong Kong people and tourists from all over the world for a joyous and healthy Year of the Monkey!

The “Golden Monkey Celebration” float is themed with the wilds of Sichuan and will display playful sculptures of Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkeys. Real bamboo poles are adapted on the float highlighting the beauty of natural living environment of the endangered species.  Peach blossoms on the float are crafted with eco-friendly LED lights to save resources and promote environmental protection. Whiskers, in the New Year look, will lead the parade team with festive drum beats plus a celebration of music and dance, set to be the highlight of the international Chinese New Year Parade. The parade performance will combine Shaolin fists and feet, kung fu sticks and exciting dances, performed by funky professional dancers and lovely children in monkey and bamboo costumes.

Mr. Perry Chung, Marketing Director of Ocean Park, said, “Besides wishing all Hong Kong people and visitors a happy new year, we also hope to wish the successful breeding in Hong Kong for this endangered species. We are committed to promoting environmental and animal conservation, while teaching to protect our amazing natural resources and supporting the preservation of precious species.”

The three Sichuan golden monkeys at Ocean Park are all just reaching maturity.  The Park’s animal care and veterinary teams have observed Qi Qi, the male golden monkey, which recently joined Ocean Park’s family of animal ambassadors in September 2015 to establish a breeding programme for this endangered species at the Park, mating with female golden monkeys Le Le and Hu Hu. The team will continue to closely monitor the animals’ behaviors and health, hopeful for a successful conception in time for Valentines’ Day and Chinese New Year. The Park is looking forward to the birth of the first golden monkey baby in Hong Kong in the Year of the Monkey.  To spread the joy, visitors at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Sichuan Treasures during Chinese New Year will have the chance to receive red packets including discounted coupons at various retail and F&B outlets in Ocean Park.
