80 Ocean Park Volunteers Gathered 750 Pounds Of Litter From Sea And Beach To Support International Coastal Cleanup 2006

2006-10-09

(Hong Kong - 7 October 2006) Ocean Park showed its support for the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) event, spearheaded by Civic Exchange, by organizing its own “Ocean Park Coastal Cleanup Activity” today, and sending over 80 volunteers to clean up the beach front below the Park’s Dolphin University. Over 750 pounds of litter was collected on the beach, mostly comprising plastic materials like bags and bottles.

The activity was jointly staged by Ocean Park’s Environmental Steering Committee, which oversees the Park’s environmental initiatives, and the Ocean Park Conservation Foundation Hong Kong. Six divers from the Hong Kong Underwater Association also joined this year’s activity by collecting litter in the seabed nearby.

Ocean Park’s Environmental Steering Committee Chairman, Matthias Li, who was also one of the volunteers, said, “The rubbish people dumped into the sea would often cause problems to sea animals. For example, these animals would get caught among the plastic bags and lunch boxes, many of which are also not biodegradable. This will not only hamper their movements, but may also affect their ability to seek food, ultimately causing the sea animals to die from starvation . Through participation in these coastal cleanup activities, we hope to arouse the general public’s awareness on the importance of keeping our oceans clean, thereby protecting precious marine life.”

One of Ocean Park’s visions is to connect people with nature, which includes educating more than 40,000 students each year about conservation and environmental protection through the Ocean Park Academy, and providing substantial funding support to the Ocean Park Conservation Foundation Hong Kong.
