Press Release 08-06-2013 Ocean Park Steps Up Effort to Promote Importance of Ocean Conservation In celebration of Annual World Oceans Day

2013-06-08

While Hong Kong people are more aware of environmental protection than before, marine debris remains a serious threat to marine life. Debris blown out from the shore or floating in the sea can cause entanglement, affecting marine life’s respiratory and preying abilities, even causing cuts or death. As a vanguard for conservation, Ocean Park aims to raise public awareness on environmental conservation through educational programmes.

In celebration of this year’s World Oceans Day, Ocean Park today led 35 staff members to clean up a beach near the Park. A total of 81.8kg marine debris was collected. As an effort to raise public awareness of environmental protection, the Park’s educators stationed at various animal exhibits also promoted to visitors the importance of environmental protection on the Earth’s ecosystem, as well as shared our love for oceans through our various marine animal ambassadors today.

Ocean Park was recently recognised by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums as among fewer than two dozen member facilities that contribute to wildlife conservation at a level equalling or exceeding 3% of their respective operating budget.
