Name That Croc: Join Ocean Park’s New Member Naming Challenge

2024-01-17

Ocean Park is thrilled to announce that the exotic female crocodile found in Lin Fa Tei, Pat Heung last year will soon become part of the Ocean Park family, with a mission to engage the public in the protection of Hong Kong’s ecosystem.

After obtaining the possession licence and ownership approval for the crocodile from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), Ocean Park is now embarking on a quest to find a name that is both meaningful and memorable. Hong Kong does not have native crocodiles, making the naming of this crocodile significant. The chosen name will serve as a reminder of the potential harm that introduced or invasive species can inflict upon local biodiversity.

Join Ocean Park’s New Member Naming Challenge
From now until 31 January 2024, Ocean Park invites you to share your suggestions for the perfect name that embodies the crocodile’s background and unique qualities. Not only will you have a chance to win an amazing prize, but you will also contribute to raising awareness about the impact of introducing non-native species, which can lead to the extinction of native animals and plants, and cause permanent alterations to habitats.

The crocodile, measuring approximately 1.9m in length and 35kg in weight, was transferred from the AFCD to Ocean Park on 30 April 2023. Estimated to be four years old, it currently resides in the Park's dedicated back-of-house area, receiving attentive care from the Park’s veterinarians and professional animal caretakers. The crocodile is in good condition.

Cast your vote for the best name!
In the first round of voting from 19 to 29 February 2024, Ocean Park's Seahorse Rangers, Hong Kong’s largest student-oriented conservation group, will join in selecting the top five names from the public submissions. Following that, the public will be invited to vote for the final name through the Park's social media platform from 4 March to 12pm on 12 March 2024.

Exciting prizes worth over HK$40,000 await you
As a special reward, the individual whose proposed name is chosen will be granted four tickets to a Get-Closer-to-the-Animals programme. In addition, they will receive in-park food and beverage vouchers valued at HK$2,000 in total, and Ocean Park Annual Membership for four visitors for unlimited access to all the Park's wonders throughout the year!

In addition to the final winner, the other four participants whose names are shortlisted in the final five will each receive four Ocean Park admission tickets, Get-Closer-to-the-Animals programme tickets for four visitors as well as in-park food and beverage vouchers valued at HK$800 in total.
