Ocean Park's Animal Ambassadors Take a Stand for Earth Day Urging Public to Reduce Plastic Use

2024-04-22

In a momentous move to celebrate Earth Day with this year’s theme, Planet vs Plastic, and align with the latest regulations set forth by the Government, Ocean Park’s animal ambassadors invite everyone to join the effort to reduce plastic consumption while enjoying fun Earth Day themed enrichments and delicacies.

Showcasing an inspiring display of solidarity, the beloved animal ambassadors from Ocean Park, including giant pandas, red pandas, meerkats, penguins, spotted seals and Beale's eyed turtles, immerse themselves in championing this important cause. These charismatic creatures have taken centre stage to delight the public with their irresistible charm, inspiring them to make a positive impact.

A driving force of environmental conservation
Ocean Park has long been at the forefront of advocating for conservation and fostering a deep connection between people and nature. Since the establishment of its Conservation Alliance in 2023, Ocean Park has provided an interactive platform for the community to engage in conservation efforts. Among its flagship initiatives, the territory-wide SGREEN campaign focuses on waste reduction, recycling, and upcycling, empowering schools and students to take an active role in building a sustainable future.

Say ‘no’ to single-use plastic
Ocean Park Conservation Foundation Hong Kong, a long-standing advocate for save the oceans and marine life from the threats of single-use plastic, has spearheaded impactful campaigns, such as the No Straw Campaign and No Plastic Week, rallying the community to reduce single-use plastic in their daily lives.

Ocean Park has also made significant moves in reducing plastic waste, starting in 2010 by discontinuing distribution of straws unless requested, followed by the replacement of plastic straws with biodegradable potato starch straws in 2021. Starting tomorrow (22 April 2024), Ocean Park and Water World will cease providing single-use plastic products in all restaurants and food kiosks while adopting eco-friendly sugar cane straws and natural bamboo cutlery.

Join us celebrating Earth Day
As part of the Earth Day celebration, Ocean Park invites children to participate in special workshops held at North Pole Encounter in the upper park, where they can enjoy colouring fun and learn about the urgent need to protect our planet's invaluable resources.

Visitors may also embark on an extraordinary journey at Ocean Park to immerse themselves in the nature! Greet our newest animal ambassador Passion, the non-native crocodile rescued in Hong Kong's rural area, at Croco Land presented by China Construction Bank (Asia), and learn about the importance of safeguarding local biodiversity. Continue the journey at Dive into Local Diversity to explore the local freshwater habitats. You will also get to know about the IUCN Red List and tips on protecting endangered species at Sloth and Friends Studio, where you will meet charming sloths and interact with other animal companions.

By engaging visitors through the adorable animal ambassadors and promoting mindful practices, Ocean Park aims to inspire a collective effort towards a cleaner and greener future.
