Plus: Meet Endangered Chinese Sturgeons & Po from Kung Fu Panda!
(5 June 2008 – Hong Kong) As the city gears up for the excitement of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, and the 1st anniversary of giant pandas Ying Ying and Le Le’s public debut in Hong Kong, Ocean Park is ready to unveil a whole new mix of super-charged action and fun with the coolest, wildest summer splash event ever - the Ocean Park Kung Fu Wet and Wild Challenge! From 28 June through 31 August, guests can experience exciting games, which are popular on TV shows, at the exhilarating summer party at Ocean Park. Other highlights include the sports-themed and adrenalin-packed Olympic Water Challenge and an all-new attraction themed entirely on this summer's movie, Kung Fu Panda by DreamWorks. This is a landmark first time collaboration between Ocean Park Hong Kong and DreamWorks Animation SKG. Guests can also be the first in Hong Kong to see giant Chinese sturgeons – the Park’s new wildlife residents – at the new look Atoll Reef.
According to Dr. Allan Zeman, Chairman of Ocean Park, this summer is all about plunging into a series of wet, fun-filled adventures that celebrate the Olympic Games.
“We have a host of new activities that will get everybody into the spirit of the Games. Ocean Park’s Kung Fu Wet and Wild Challenge is full of exciting and thrilling physical activities that will whip participants into shape, just like those athletes training for the Olympics.”
“We are also thrilled to showcase our latest wild aquatic friends – five Chinese sturgeons, each representing one of the five Olympic Rings – that were presented to us by the country’s National Aquatic Wildlife Conservation Association. These are rare national treasures and we invite everybody to come and learn about them and about our role in aquatic wildlife conservation.”
Tai Shue Wan as the Olympic Games Sports Ground
At Tai Shue Wan Plaza, guests can put their Olympic spirit to the test and take on the Olympic Water Challenge, featuring one interactive encounter after another, that will keep them jumping, dodging, climbing and cheering all the way. This aquatic adventure, with splashy surprises from every corner, features super-sized inflatable water-jetting dumbbells, a giant bowling alley with a twist, bicycle wheel, hurdle maze, archery zone, human sphere and even a bungee run. Also at Tai Shue Wan is World War H2O, an ultimate combat station for guests to hurl water balloons at opponents and get sprinkled, sprayed and totally soaked! More high-powered sporting spectacles can be experienced at Extreme Trampoline, featuring an awe-inspiring, gravity-defying mix of top trampoline stunts performed by world-class experts from Canada. The smaller kids can also opt to entertain themselves at attractions like the Bubbly Tubby and the Dancing Fountain.
“So be prepared to get wet from head to toe. I guarantee you that this is going to be an action-packed summer that’s going to be hard to forget,” said Dr. Zeman.
World-class Swimming Performance at Ocean Theatre
The energy continues up in the Headland with Aquatic Perfection, Ocean Theatre’s first-ever presentation performed by world-class experts from Canada. It will feature an aquatic troupe swimming gracefully choreographed routines. Set to stunning musical and visual effects, this dynamic show which will make its debut on 12 July is a sure Olympic-class crowd pleaser!
Chinese sturgeons – the New Residents of Atoll Reef
Another must-see is at Atoll Reef, where guests can welcome the newly-arrived group of five Chinese sturgeons. These endangered creatures – known as “fossil fish” - are among the world's oldest fish and have existed for over 140 million years since the days of the dinosaurs. Measuring up to 2 metres in length and weighing between 200 and 500 kilograms, these gigantic national treasures are listed as China's Class One Protected Animals, and are a fascinating sight to behold. Atoll Reef is also decorated with new education and exhibition corners which display information about the fish.
Kung Fu Pandamania at Lowland Area
Back at the Lowland area, guests will have a chance to catch panda mania at Kung Fu Panda Live at the Kung Fu Panda Plaza. This is an all-new attraction zone themed entirely on Kung Fu Panda, the movie. In addition to experiencing Kung Fu Panda icons and live characters, guests will also have a chance to try some kung fu of their own, and fight their way through five stages of personal combat, before meeting and greeting the film’s star, Po, for the perfect photo-op. The more energetic little ones can even sign up for the one-of-a-kind Kung Fu Academy. Cap off the day with a visit to see Ying Ying, Le Le, An An, and Jia Jia at the nearby Hong Kong Jockey Club Giant Panda Habitat.
