What is CITES?

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is a conservation agreement among governments. It aims to safeguard wild animals and plants by regulating international trade. The protected species are listed in one of the following appendices:

Appendix I Threatened with extinction, thus international trade for commercial purposes is prohibited
Appendix II Not currently threatened with extinction, but international trade must be strictly regulated to avoid such consequences
Appendix III Regionally protected, but requires international cooperation to regulate the trade
