(Hong Kong – 16 April) Ocean Park chairman, Dr Allan Zeman, and the Director Professor of the Wolong Nature Reserve Administration (Wolong), Zhang Hemin, today signed the agreement in Beijing, and which confirmed the arrangements regarding the presentation of two new pandas by the Central Government to the people of Hong Kong as gifts to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). The agreement included arrangements for co-operation between the two parties in the areas of panda keeping, breeding, conservation and education, as well as finalizing details for the transfer of the new pandas from Wolong to Ocean Park Hong Kong.
As the entrusted carer for An An and Jia Jia, presented as gifts to the Hong Kong people in 1999, Ocean Park has had a long standing partnership with Wolong. Dr Zeman said, “Ocean Park is very grateful to the support the Wolong experts have been giving, and we are delighted to continue this strong co-operation to care for four pandas.”
Dr Zeman said, “Ocean Park is honoured to be the caregiver to An An and Jia Jia, and now, to the new giant pandas as well. We are thankful to the Central Government for these gifts and their confidence in Ocean Park, and to the HKSAR government for their support. We will do our very best to ensure the best care for the four pandas, so that the people of Hong Kong as well as from all over the world, can appreciate and learn about these rare national treasures.”
“Today is a very important moment for Ocean Park, and it is an auspicious occasion to forge a stronger and deeper relationship with Wolong. Together, we can strengthen our efforts in the care and preservation of the giant pandas, as well as the conservation of their habitats, and the development of the surrounding community,” Dr Zeman added.
In January this year, the Central Government announced that they will present a pair of young pandas to the people of Hong Kong to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR. Ocean Park was again entrusted to be the carer for the new pandas. Currently, Ocean Park is renovating the Hong Kong Jockey Club Giant Panda Habitat to accommodate An An, Jia Jia, and the two new young pandas. According to Dr Zeman, the renovation is proceeding according to schedule. Ocean Park is also working closely with the authorities to get ready for the pandas’ arrival on 26 April.
“The whole of Hong Kong is looking forward to the occasion, and we are pleased to be having four panda ambassadors soon to help us connect our guests with the wonders of nature,” Dr Zeman said.
