Visit Ocean Park’s Iconic Marine Stars and Miniature Rainforest at Victoria Park As the Park Wins “Award for Design Excellence (Landscape Display) - Gold Award” at Hong Kong Flower Show

2011-03-11

(Hong Kong – 11 March 2011) Ocean Park is proud to again celebrate the coming of spring at the annual Hong Kong Flower Show, which kicked off this morning at Victoria Park, with a vibrant exhibit that features iconic marine creatures from Aqua City on one side, and a lush miniature rainforest on the other. The Park was awarded Award for Design Excellence (Landscape Display) - Gold Award today as Mrs. Selina Tsang, wife of the Chief Executive of the HKSAR and officiating guest at the opening ceremony, paid a visit to Ocean Park’s display. Ocean Park’s Chief Executive, Tom Mehrmann and Executive Director of Operations and Entertainment, Todd Hougland, as well as fellow colleagues also attended to enjoy the Park’s latest landscape masterpiece.

To celebrate the recent opening of Aqua City, which features the Grand Aquarium, one of the top aquariums in the world, and the upcoming Rainforest attraction area, Ocean Park has come up with a dynamic exhibit that introduces visitors to a world of wonderful biodiversity, both on land and in the sea.

Ocean Park’s exhibit is made up of 7,000 plants in 20 flower species and 60 types of shrubbery and trees, and echoes the theme of the show this year - Symphony of Spring Flowers.

Upon entering the exhibit, visitors are greeted by two pillars of flowers each topped with a bird’s nest. A collection of iconic stars from Aqua City, including the manta ray, Napoleon wrasse and bluefin tuna, rest on a colorful sea of pansies, petunias and bedding geraniums, all carefully arranged to mimic the colours of coral and the rhythm of the waves. The adorable coral fish is also hidden among the flower bed awaiting your discovery.

On the other side of the exhibit, a lush miniature rainforest was built with the highlight being this year’s theme flower the primula, complimented by balsams, dianthuses and cosmos intertwining with one besides a water scene. Ocean Park also utilized tree stumps to nurture precious fungi and gave discarded construction materials a new lease on life as a water fountain. This shows that by treasuring and reusing our existing resources, we can actually make the earth more beautiful.

‘We are very proud to have received the award this year and I would like to dedicate this prize to our Landscaping team who worked extremely hard to breathe life into this beautiful exhibit in celebration of the opening of Aqua City and future Rainforest area. I hope the floral display will inspire every visitor to protect our land and ocean, which are home to countless plants and animal species,’ said Tom Mehrmann.

The Hong Kong Flower Show 2011 is organized by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and will be held from 11 to 20 March 2011, from 9am to 9pm at Victoria Park. For enquiries, please call Ocean Park’s customer hotline at 3923 2323.
