Ocean Park Preserves Cultural Tradition with Pok Fu Lam Village Fire Dragon Exhibition and Fire Dragon Dance

Ocean Park has again teamed up with the Pok Fu Lam Village Fire Dragon Association to present a fire dragon exhibition at the Park’s beautiful retro zone, Old Hong Kong. From now until 5 October 2023, visitors will have the opportunity to appreciate the awe-inspiring craftsmanship and follow intriguing stories behind the legendary Pok Fu Lam Village Fire Dragon as it makes its ritualistic return to the sea during the Mid-Autumn Festival to bring the villagers good health, peace and luck.
Intrigued visitors can also glimpse the Pok Fu Lam Fire Dragon Dance today at the Park. On Mid-Autumn Festival, the roaring dragon will traverse the Pok Fu Lam Village and streets of the Southern District, before arriving at Waterfall Bay off the coast of Wah Fu Estate.
"We are thrilled to collaborate with the Pok Fu Lam Village Fire Dragon Association, as we both embrace unwavering dedication to promoting the cultural heritage of Southern Hong Kong," said Ivan Wong, Chief Executive of Ocean Park Corporation. "The Fire Dragon Exhibition is more than a showcase. It acts as a platform for educating and captivating visitors of all generations, instilling a profound respect for the thriving customs of our district that has endured for over a century. We hope visitors coming to Ocean Park and the Southern District could experience our city's intangible cultural heritage coming alive during the Mid-Autumn Festival."

Discover the meticulous craftsmanship
Constructing a fire dragon begins with creating the bamboo framework for the dragon's head before bamboo strips are used to shape its features. The dragon's body is constructed by layering straws on a thick rope, tightly securing it with iron wire. The Pok Fu Lam Village residents and volunteers work together to complete the fire dragon, which takes approximately one month.

Enthralling fire dragon dance with a twist
The fire dragon dance parade staged at Ocean Park today is a smoke and fire-free rendition in which the dragon joss sticks are decorated with fluorescent materials for a unique, captivating visual effect. The Pok Fu Lam Village Fire Dragon crew comprises athletic dragon dancers of all ages and generations.
